In this article at cnet, Bill Gates talks some pretty serious smack about the mac vs pc ads.
On digg yesterday, one of the top stories was a mac bashing article by Charlie Brooker that really echoes a lot of my sentiments. There are some great things about macs, I will concede, my particular needs are met very well by a PC. Sure, now with bootcamp and parallels, I can run more software on a mac but I wouldn’t buy one for the following key reasons:
1)Lack of hardware support and peripherals
2)Lack of upgradability of desktop machines
3)Lack of a right mouse button on laptop machines
Today I heard about a friend who was successful installing his new webcam under Windows XP. Unfortunately his girlfriend was unable to get the same model of webcam (logitech by the way) working on her mac. What a shame.
Apple’s solution to a lack of working peripherals? Do it ourselves and integrate it. (the iSight)
Apple’s solution to a lack of software available on the OSX platform? Do it ourselves and integrate it. (iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto, etc)
Is this a good business model? We’ll see. While it may be popular and gaining popularity with consumers, I have yet to hear anything about businesses adopting macs. Sure you can run windows under parallels or bootcamp but its not quite the same.
What strikes me as funny in these ads is sometimes Apple concedes stuff to the PC. It attempts to mock the PC for being too business focused and having “high tech hardware” but this is exactly why the PC is the number one platform in enterprises. The IT guy in this commercial is meant to be a jab at the PC but its true that IT guys hardly touch macs – and who buys computers for corporate America? IT guys.
